Dental Procedures

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. It addresses problems with the tooth's soft core (dental pulp).

The Root Canal Process:

  1. Opening the tooth's crown to access the pulp
  2. Removing the diseased or damaged pulp
  3. Cleaning and shaping the root canal
  4. Applying medication if needed to clear infection
  5. Placing a temporary filling
  6. Installing a permanent crown for protection

Modern root canals are virtually painless and extremely effective at saving teeth that might otherwise need extraction.

Does teeth whitening damage teeth?

Professional teeth whitening, when done correctly, does not damage tooth enamel. Our whitening treatments are safe and effective, using controlled concentrations of whitening agents. Some temporary sensitivity may occur but typically resolves quickly after treatment.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. The crown attached to the implant typically lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement due to normal wear. Regular dental visits and good oral hygiene are essential for longevity.

Object Caught Between Teeth

Try to gently remove it with dental floss. Never use sharp instruments. If unsuccessful, contact us.

Severe Toothache

Oral Health & Prevention

What is plaque and why is it harmful?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. When you eat or drink, the bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel, leading to cavities. If not removed, plaque can also irritate gums, causing gingivitis and potentially advancing to periodontal disease.

Prevention Tips:

  • Brush twice daily for at least 2 minutes
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
  • Use antimicrobial mouthwash
  • Visit us every 6 months for professional cleanings

Why is brushing and flossing so important?

Brushing and flossing remove decay-causing plaque from teeth surfaces and between teeth where your toothbrush can't reach.

Proper Brushing Technique:

  • Hold brush at 45-degree angle to gums
  • Use gentle, circular motions
  • Brush all surfaces: outer, inner, and chewing
  • Don't forget your tongue
  • Replace toothbrush every 3-4 months

Effective Flossing:

  • Use 18 inches of floss
  • Wrap around middle fingers
  • Guide floss between teeth gently
  • Curve floss around each tooth in C-shape
  • Use clean sections as you progress

How often should I visit the dentist?

Most people should visit the dentist every six months for a cleaning and check-up. However, some patients may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health needs, such as those with gum disease, a history of cavities, or other risk factors.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Yes, dental X-rays are very safe. We use digital X-rays which produce 80% less radiation than traditional X-rays. The amount of radiation exposure from a full mouth series is less than a person receives in a single day from natural sources. We always use protective lead aprons and follow ALARA principles (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
